OUR MINISTRY

Molo is a rural town in the Rift Valley of Kenya. It is situated 220km north west of Nairobi with a population of approximately 100,000 people. There is a big farming community, with a large number of subsistence farmers. There is extreme poverty and lack of basic life necessities, such as water, sanitation, medical care and electricity. The situation in the town and surrounding area has been made worse by a large number of displaced people due to tribal clashes, which date back to 1992.

Two projects helping disadvantaged children at risk

Matumaini Rehabilitation Centre
The central and distinctive ministry of the community is the residential care of physically and mentally disabled children and young people. They are integrated as much as possible into local schools and activities. The ministry includes:
• A rehabilitation/care centre for children with physical and/or mental disabilities (some of whom are abandoned by their families or are orphans)
• A skills training centre for young people--including the ones who are disabled
• A medical dispensary
• A part time Bible School
• A child sponsorship programme
• Supporting the local community

Molo Street Children Project
The situation of extreme poverty and the large number of families who exist on a day-to-day basis is due to a number of factors such as:
• There being very little or no work available
• A large number of single parent families
• A growing number of orphans due to HIV / AIDS and other causes
• A large number of 2nd marriages or relationships, where the child is not welcomed by the new partner, abused or thrown out
• Poor and tenuous family structures ie large families put a strain on an already strained or non existent income
• Large numbers of displaced people due to tribal clashes
Molo Street Children Project provides for these families in the following ways:
• A week day drop-in centre in the centre of town with informal schooling
• An outreach work to give help to the children’s families
• A child sponsorship programme to provide education and support
• A hostel to provide accommodation for those children in need

Also the team is involved with the Gold Star Community Link Project initiated by the Welsh Assembly, linking Molo with Brecon, Wales, UK. This project is designed to help the towns form a partnership, providing professionals in both towns with the opportunity to learn from each other and share skills and resources. The team is involved with the management and logistics of this project in Molo.
