| Counselor Coordinator for Traumatized Children | ||
The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) has reeked havoc in Uganda for many years. The LRA came into Teso, the region in which we are ministering, in 2003 first entering and causing the most atrocities in Obalanga and Marungatuny, Amuria. They killed, burned villages, stole, raped women, and kidnapped hundreds of children to act as soldiers, hard-laborers, and sex-slaves. They severely beat and mistreated these children often forcing the children to do the same to fellow abductees. Those who were rescued by the Ugandan Peoples Defense Army or escaped on their own are severely traumatized with little or no help. To top it off, when they returned to their families in the Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps and eventually, when it was safe to do so, back to their land to rebuild their homes and farms, they lost everything again last year due to the floods and had to return to the IDP camps. Considering the need and neglect of these children, we need someone to mobilize local Christians to spiritually counsel (in conjunction with psycho-socially counsel) the traumatized children. By mobilize, we mean equip, exemplify, encourage and assist. Due to cultural and language barriers, it is better for local Ugandans to do the counseling. However, they need to be effectively trained by someone who understands the trauma and psychological and spiritual needs of the children. |
